From relocating internationally to becoming an entrepreneur, I have learned that embracing change can be daunting, but it often leads to the most rewarding paths and unexpected opportunities.
For my entire adult life, I worked as a pharmacist, thinking it was what I would do forever. However, in 2021, real estate emerged as something new and exciting, but I was still hesitant. Trying to figure out what to do, I would ask those around me what they thought. The overwhelming response was, “You would be great!” I wasn’t quite as confident. The idea of diving into a completely new field was daunting. And yet, something kept telling me I needed to give it a try.
My experience moving to the United States had already taught me it is sometimes the least expected path that turns out to be the perfect one. Back in 2003, I made the significant decision to move from Nigeria to Dallas. It was something I never planned to do. In Nigeria, I was at the top of my class at university, and I received an amazing opportunity to work at the President of Nigeria’s office after graduating. My career was on the rise, and I saw limitless opportunities ahead of me as a pharmacist.
And yet, my siblings in the U.S. encouraged me to take the pharmacy exam for the United States, insisting that I give it a shot and make the move. Reluctantly, I agreed, thinking it would be a mere formality to get them to stop bothering me about it. To my surprise, I passed the exam—I took it as a sign and picked up my life to move to Dallas, Texas.
Although I had family in Dallas, leaving behind my friends and the life I knew in Nigeria was difficult. I had in the back of my mind that I could always return to Nigeria if things didn’t work out. However, the move opened up new opportunities. I quickly found a job in pharmacy due to high demand and recruiters reaching out directly after the exam. It didn’t take long for me to love my new life in the U.S., surrounded by my supportive family and a vibrant community I enjoyed being a part of.
Getting married and having a family made balancing the demanding pharmacy hours increasingly difficult. The turning point came during the COVID-19 pandemic. The relentless work hours and instability with childcare forced my husband and me to reevaluate our careers. I needed a path that offered more control over my time, and that’s when real estate became an option. We had talked about it for a while, and the timing seemed right. My sisters encouraged me, and despite initial self-doubt, I passed the real estate exam—once again, I took it as a sign and dove in!
Starting in real estate was not without its challenges. The initial nervousness about entering a new field was real, but the booming market at the time helped. Before I even had received my MLS logins, I was working on my first transaction—it was a whirlwind, but I was committed to learning everything I could as quickly as I could. Those who have known me for years showed their support, trusting in me from day one to help with their real estate needs, making the transition into this new field less daunting.
With three children, Amaka, Dozie and Muna, real estate has given me more flexibility in my schedule, allowing me to be present for their activities and maintain a better work-life balance. Additionally, real estate has given me the opportunity to give back. I enjoy supporting important causes, donating and attending community events. I have always been passionate about serving others and having a positive impact in any way I can!
My experiences have taught me time and time again the importance of embracing change and trusting in new opportunities. My faith is very important to me, and I believe when faced with these pivotal moments, God showed me the path forward.
